The Tathāgatagarbha must continuously discern karmic seeds even in the state of Nirvana without residue. If the Tathāgatagarbha lacks wisdom and cannot attain superior understanding, it would not know what the karmic seeds are or whether they have ripened. Consequently, an Arhat would never emerge from Nirvana while still possessing the manas and the five aggregates. In Nirvana without residue, if the Tathāgatagarbha lacks samādhi, its mind would become scattered. Why would it become scattered? The Buddha's teaching on the Śūraṅgama samādhi in the Śūraṅgama Sūtra precisely refers to the Tathāgatagarbha's samādhi, which neither enters nor departs. Given this, since the Tathāgatagarbha eternally abides in samādhi without exiting, how could it be scattered and lack samādhi? The wisdom of the Tathāgatagarbha neither increases nor decreases; it eternally possesses the great prajñā wisdom, capable of discerning all dharmas, creating all dharmas, and sustaining all dharmas. Even in Nirvana without residue, dharmas still confront the Tathāgatagarbha; therefore, the mental factors of the Tathāgatagarbha continue to exist.
