Dharma Teachings

24 Nov 2019    Sunday     4th Teach Total 2057

Excerpt from the Śūraṅgama Sūtra: Volume VI

How do these thieves act? They borrow my name to trade upon the Tathagata, proclaiming as the Buddha's teachings what was never spoken by the Tathagata, while declaring the Tathagata's actual teachings to be non-Buddhist. They present the Dharma as non-Dharma and non-Dharma as the Dharma, thus committing all manner of unwholesome deeds. These thieves all declare that the Buddha Dharma is not for monastics to cultivate, that monastics cannot attain Buddhahood, and that one need not leave home to practice the Dharma. They claim that fully ordained bhikkhus are of Hinayana capacity, only able to practice the Hinayana path and incapable of achieving Buddhahood. After spreading such claims, these thieves cause countless sentient beings to be misled, leading them to commit the karmic offenses of slandering the monastic community and slandering the Buddha, thereby causing them to fall into the Avici Hell.
