Chan Meditation and Contemplative Practice

Meditative investigation and contemplative practice differ somewhat in meaning. Contemplative practice permeates the entire course of cultivation, ranging from shallow to profound levels. Meditative investigation, however, involves concentrating one's full effort and energy on investigating to realize the inherently pure mind, to comprehend the location of the mind, and to understand the substance and functioning of the true mind. The character 'Chan' (禅) within meditative investigation represents the true mind's inherent nature. Investigating this true mind's inherent nature is crucial and essential for the path of cultivation; the journey towards Nirvana and Buddhahood begins from here.

Contemplative practice, in contrast, encompasses a broader range, varying in depth and level. It can be undertaken at any stage or in any state; all phenomena can be objects of contemplative practice. The results obtained may be significant or minor, and the duration of contemplative practice may be long or short. Once a satisfactory conclusion is reached, that phase of contemplative practice concludes. Should any unresolved questions arise later, contemplative practice resumes.
