Why Are Sentient Beings Not Liberated?

Because the manas constantly grasps the dharmas perceived by the perceiving-aspect (darśana-bhāga) of the Ālayavijñāna as self and as belonging to self, it is bound by those dharmas and therefore is not liberated. Whatever dharma the Ālayavijñāna perceives, it manifests that dharma just like a mirror. After the manas contacts the manifested dharmas, it takes them all as self and as belonging to self, and thus greed, craving, and attachment arise. If the manas clearly recognizes that these dharmas plainly all belong to the Ālayavijñāna and are not mine, then the manas eradicates ignorance, eradicates the view of self (satkāya-dṛṣṭi) regarding persons and the view of self regarding dharmas, and gains right view; it no longer grasps these dharmas as self and as belonging to self, and thus is liberated from all dharmas and attains buddhahood.
