Verses on the Eight Consciousnesses

One mother bore seven sons, yet the seven sons are each different; the eldest relies on his mother's standing, acting as master and holding power;

The second is skilled at planning and scheming, occupying the position of chief steward; the remaining five brothers labor and earn money.

The venerable mother diligently nurtures them, the master issues commands; the steward diligently keeps the accounts, while the five brothers toil wearily;

The mother's kindness spoils the children, so the eldest often flaunts his power; the second sways with the wind, and the five brothers smash, loot, and grab.

Once evil retribution arrives, suffering besets the whole family; the steward, for the sake of livelihood, learns from his virtuous mother;

After learning, he advises the eldest that good and evil will ultimately have their retribution; the eldest's mind opens up, and life gradually takes a turn for the better.

The virtuous mother finally moves her sons, and all seven return to her; the second is clever and wise, learning virtue and resembling the mother most;

He supervises the eldest brother and guides the younger brothers; the whole family turns toward goodness together, ultimately reaching immeasurable blessings.
