Transformations Following Enlightenment

Chan masters say: "After enlightenment, one is still the same person, but no longer acts from the same place." This means that although an enlightened person appears outwardly unchanged, their mental state, moral conduct, and other aspects are no longer the same as before. Transformation has occurred—naturally becoming purer, better, with enhanced virtue and cultivation. Their disposition grows kinder and more innocent. Why is this? Having realized the non-self nature of the five aggregates, their mind attains clarity. Since there is no self, a portion of selfish thoughts and distractions is eliminated, naturally elevating their morality. Their sentiments and refinement naturally deepen, while the motivations, focus, and perspective behind their actions all undergo change. Thus, their entire mental disposition becomes different—even though their physical appearance remains that of the same person.
