Commentary on the Dhyana Samadhi Sutra (162)

At that time, I contemplated and observed within my mind. I clearly perceived that this path should not be taken to attain realization. Due to the power of two factors, I did not enter nirvana. First, great compassion prevents me from abandoning sentient beings. Second, I deeply understand the true reality of all phenomena: all mental states and mental factors arise from causes and conditions. How could I now follow these unreal phenomena? I should carefully contemplate and enter deep meditation to observe the twelve links of dependent origination, seeking to thoroughly understand what these twelve links truly are.

At that moment, while contemplating and observing thoughts within the mind, I could clearly perceive that practicing the Four Noble Truths would not lead to the attainment of the fourth fruition and nirvana. Due to the force of two factors, I was prevented from entering nirvana. First, great compassion and pity for sentient beings—I cannot abandon them without regard. Second, I deeply understand the true reality of all phenomena: all mental states, consciousness, and mental factors arise from causes and conditions. How could I now follow these unreal phenomena? I should carefully contemplate and enter deep concentration to observe the twelve links of dependent origination, thoroughly understanding what these twelve links truly are.
