It is precisely because of the manas's imputed nature (parikalpita-svabhāva) that sentient beings suffer the various miseries of birth-and-death in saṃsāra; if the manas's imputed nature (parikalpita-svabhāva) is removed, nirvāṇa will be attained. However, the imputed nature (parikalpita-svabhāva) is not so easily removed: it requires the eradication of the view of self (satkāya-dṛṣṭi-prahāṇa), the eradication of self-grasping, the realization of true suchness (tathatā), and only when the grasping of dharmas as self has also been completely extinguished can the manas's imputed nature (parikalpita-svabhāva) be fully and thoroughly removed, attaining great liberation.
