From the perspective of characteristics, the first six consciousnesses are constantly arising, ceasing, and changing. Even under normal daytime circumstances, they continuously arise from one phenomenon, cease from another, then cease from this phenomenon and arise from yet another. The intrinsic nature of the six consciousnesses is precisely this perpetual cycle of arising and ceasing, fundamentally unstable. Why must the six consciousnesses undergo this continuous arising and ceasing across various phenomena? It is due to the fluctuations of manas’ thoughts, the incessant shifting of its clinging nature, and its inherent restlessness. If manas is subdued, and the mind does not scatter, the thoughts of manas will no longer jump around restlessly. They will settle on one or a few phenomena, and the six consciousnesses will likewise cease to be scattered. They will not randomly arise and perceive everywhere, nor will they jump back and forth.
