From the perspective of appearances, the first six consciousnesses constantly undergo birth, change, and cessation. Even under normal daytime conditions, they continuously arise from one dharma, cease upon another, then cease upon that dharma and arise from yet another. The intrinsic nature of the six consciousnesses is precisely this unceasing cycle of arising and ceasing; they are fundamentally unstable. Why do the six consciousnesses engage in this constant arising and ceasing upon various dharmas? It is due to the fluctuations of manas (the thinking mind), the continuous shifting of its grasping nature, and its inherent lack of stillness. If manas is subdued and the mind does not scatter, the thoughts and mental formations of manas will not jump about incessantly. They will stabilize upon one or a few dharmas, the six consciousnesses will likewise cease to be scattered, they will not arise and cognize everywhere, and they will not jump around.
