(4) Original Text: Furthermore, monks, contemplating and observing the complete cessation of suffering and reaching the very end of suffering, they contemplate: by what causes, by what arising, by what birth, by what contact does that contact [come to be]? It should be understood that contact arises due to the six sense-bases as cause, arises due to the arising of the six sense-bases, is produced by the birth of the six sense-bases, and contact arises when the six sense-bases make contact. When the six sense-bases cease without remainder, then contact ceases. Monks should truly understand the path leading to the cessation of the six sense-bases and cultivate the way and the subsidiary factors directed towards the complete cessation of suffering. This is called a monk being directed towards the complete cessation of suffering, reaching the very end of suffering.
Explanation: The Buddha further taught: Furthermore, monks should contemplate and observe the complete cessation of suffering, reaching the very end of suffering, and then further contemplate and observe by what causal factors contact arises, what dharma produces it through accumulation, what dharma gives rise to it after being born, and what dharma causes contact to arise after making contact. At that time, it should be understood that contact arises due to the six sense-bases as the causal condition, arises due to the arising of the six sense-bases, is produced by the generation of the six sense-bases leading to the appearance of contact, and it is the contact made by the six sense-bases that causes contact to arise. When the six sense-bases cease without remainder, contact ceases. Monks should truly understand the path they cultivate leading to the cessation of the six sense-bases, and cultivate the way directed towards the complete cessation of suffering and the subsidiary factors. This is called a monk being directed towards the complete cessation of suffering, able to reach the very end of suffering.
