During the cultivation process, as the ignorance of the mental faculty is gradually eliminated, afflictions are eradicated, and self-attachment is removed, the mental faculty becomes unattached to the three realms. Consequently, the phenomena of the three realms will cease. Ultimately, the mental faculty itself will necessarily extinguish, entering complete nirvana, which is tranquil and serene. Ignorance is the fundamental and primary cause of the cycle of birth and death. As long as ignorance is not eliminated, mental formations persist, the craving within the three realms remains unceasing, and the suffering of birth and death continues without end. However, sentient beings have grown accustomed to the suffering of birth and death. Having long dwelled in a foul pit, they no longer perceive its stench; they are not aware that birth and death constitute great suffering. Clinging persistently to birth and death, when sentient beings lack the desire for enlightenment, even the Buddha cannot save them.
