Commentary on The Sutra of the Compendium of Fathers and Sons (Part III)

What are Brahma's Voice and Brahma's Conduct?

Upon attaining Buddhahood, sentient beings possess the thirty-two major marks and eighty secondary characteristics. One of these marks is "Brahma's Voice" — the Buddha's voice is exquisitely clear and resonant. Even when hundreds of billions of humans and celestial beings gather to listen to the Dharma, no amplification is needed; all can hear it clearly. Moreover, not only can humans understand the language spoken by the Buddha, but ghosts and spirits can understand it, animals can understand it, and beings across all six realms can understand it. The Chinese can understand it, people from other nations can understand it; individuals of different languages and races can understand it, and even Bodhisattvas from other Buddha lands can understand it, all hearing the Buddha's words distinctly. This is one of the virtues of a Buddha.

Brahma's Conduct refers to pure conduct — the attainment of purity in body, speech, and mind, free from the defilements of desire, which constitutes Brahma's Conduct. The perfection of pure conduct is the perfection of Brahma's Conduct, where the mind is without the defilements of greed, hatred, or delusion, and mental actions are purified. The World Honored One is currently expounding the Dharma of the distinctions and positions of the six elements: earth, water, fire, wind, space, and consciousness — addressing the positions, definitions, distinctions, boundaries, functions, and other aspects of these six Dharma gates.
