Saṃyuktāgama Sūtra (No. 299)

Thus have I heard. At one time the Buddha was staying in the village of the Kurus. Then a certain bhikkhu came to the Buddha, bowed down to the Buddha's feet, stepped back, sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha: Bhagavan, was the doctrine of dependent origination made by the Bhagavan or by others? The Buddha told the bhikkhu: The doctrine of dependent origination is not made by me, nor by others. However, whether the Tathagata has arisen or not arisen, the dharmadhatu abides. The Tathagata awakens to this doctrine, attains perfect enlightenment, and expounds it to beings, revealing and making known the doctrine of dependent origination. That is to say, because this exists, that exists; because this arises, that arises; namely, with ignorance as condition, volitional formations, up to the arising of the whole mass of suffering. With the cessation of ignorance, cessation of volitional formations, up to the cessation of the whole mass of suffering. When the Buddha had spoken this discourse, that bhikkhu heard what the Buddha had said, rejoiced, and put it into practice.

A bhikkhu from another tribe saw the Bhagavan, bowed down with palms together in reverence, then stepped back and sat down to one side, and said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, was the doctrine of dependent origination invented by you or by others? The Buddha told the bhikkhu: The doctrine of dependent origination was not made by me, nor by others. However, whether the Tathagata arises or not, the dharmadhatu abides. The Tathagatas themselves awaken to this doctrine, attain perfect enlightenment, expound it to the beings, reveal and make known the doctrine of dependent origination, that is to say, because this exists, that exists; because this arises, that arises; namely, with ignorance as condition, volitional formations, up to the final condition of birth leading to aging-and-death, the whole mass of suffering. And with the cessation of ignorance, cessation of volitional formations; with the cessation of volitional formations, cessation of consciousness; with the cessation of consciousness, cessation of name-and-form; with the cessation of name-and-form, cessation of the six sense bases; with the cessation of the six sense bases, cessation of contact; with the cessation of contact, cessation of feeling; with the cessation of feeling, cessation of craving; with the cessation of craving, cessation of grasping; with the cessation of grasping, cessation of becoming; with the cessation of becoming, cessation of birth; with the cessation of birth, cessation of aging-and-death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, and the whole mass of suffering.
