A Bodhisattva is an awakened sentient being who benefits themselves and others; if they do not deliver sentient beings, they are an Arhat, not a Bodhisattva.
By delivering sentient beings, a Bodhisattva cultivates their own merit and virtue while also increasing their wisdom. Most importantly, in the process of achieving Buddhahood, a Bodhisattva must continuously form karmic connections with an ever-increasing number of sentient beings to gather immeasurable and boundless disciples across all levels, thereby enabling the future establishment of a Buddha-land.
For a Bodhisattva to attain Buddhahood and establish a Buddha-land, they require the support and cooperation of countless disciples at various levels to widely deliver innumerable sentient beings. Without disciples, they would be isolated and unable to establish a Buddha-land. Moreover, their own progress on the path relies on their disciples. Just like a pyramid, they are the pinnacle; without the base, how can there be a pinnacle? This means that delivering sentient beings is delivering oneself. A Bodhisattva must unconditionally deliver sentient beings to attain Buddhahood. Conversely, their own progress on the path depends on the guidance and assistance of true spiritual mentors, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas. Therefore, forming karmic connections with genuine spiritual mentors is also crucial.
