The Correct Method of Breathing Buddha Recitation

When reciting the Buddha's name, the sound flows out from the chest and oral cavity, which is the process of energy moving from the dantian (elixir field) within and outside the body, releasing gas. Therefore, one cannot recite the Buddha's name while inhaling, as the incoming breath counteracts the sound flow of recitation. Recitation can only be done during exhalation. While inhaling, one must concentrate wholeheartedly on the act of inhalation, placing full attention on the process of drawing in the breath. Where the breath goes, the attention must follow. This promotes the smooth flow of qi and blood, bringing comfort to body and mind, and allows the mind to settle down very quickly.

During inhalation, the breath enters through the nasal passages, descending all the way to the dantian. If the power of the mind is sufficient, one can guide it to reach the limbs and all the pores throughout the body, simultaneously paying attention to experiencing and feeling the bodily sensations. Then, during exhalation, the outgoing breath should be slight and gentle, because all the body's cells undergo metabolism and expel waste gases. These waste gases are expelled through the pores all over the body, as the pores are also capable of respiration.

The method of reciting the Buddha's name coordinated with breathing allows the mind and qi to become unified, harmonizes body and mind, and ensures the smooth flow of qi and blood. It enables one to attain samadhi (deep concentration) quickly, to stabilize deeply within it, and to remain in samadhi for extended periods. Beginners learning to cultivate concentration should start with this method. For specific details on the recitation method, please refer to the book Cultivating Samadhi and Attaining Enlightenment Through Chan Meditation.
