Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, Volume 9: The Twelve Links of Dependent Origination

(VI) Original text: What is eye-contact? It is born from the coming together of the three [factors: sense faculty, object, and consciousness], capable of grasping the pure, subtle, and other meanings of the object-field. Similarly, the other contacts [ear-contact, nose-contact, tongue-contact, body-contact, mind-contact] should be understood accordingly, each described in relation to its specific object-field. This is further of two kinds: namely, the contact of seeds embraced by the seeds of the six sense bases, and the contact of fruition born from those [seeds]. In the desire realm, there are six [contacts]. In the form realm, there are four. In the formless realm, there is one.

Explanation: What is eye-contact? Eye-contact is born from the coming together of the three factors (sense faculty, object, and consciousness), capable of grasping the pure, subtle, and other meanings of the object-field. Ear-contact, nose-contact, tongue-contact, body-contact, and mind-contact are also like this; they are similarly born from the coming together of the three factors (sense faculty, object, and consciousness), capable of grasping the pure, subtle meanings of the object-field phenomena. This includes two kinds: The first is the contact of seeds embraced by the seeds of the six sense bases. The first five sense bases in their seed state have not yet manifested, so contact does not arise. Since the mental faculty (manas) is not extinguished, the mental sense base is not extinguished, it merely cannot make contact on the level of name-and-form. The second is the contact of fruition induced by the six sense bases. In the desire realm, there are six kinds of contact. In the form realm, there are four kinds of contact (lacking nose-contact and tongue-contact). In the formless realm, there is only mental contact, lacking the first five kinds of contact.

Original text: What is pleasant feeling? It is the agreeable, joyful feeling born conditioned by faculties and object-fields that are conducive to pleasure, embraced within feeling. What is painful feeling? It is the non-agreeable, non-joyful feeling born conditioned by [faculties and object-fields] that are conducive to pain, embraced within feeling. What is neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling? It is the feeling that is neither agreeable nor disagreeable, born conditioned by [faculties and object-fields] that are conducive to neither-painful-nor-pleasant, embraced within feeling. In the desire realm, there are three [feelings]. In the form realm, there are two. From the fourth dhyāna upwards, up to the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, there is only the third, the neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling. This is also of two kinds: namely, the feeling of seeds embraced by the seeds of contact, and the feeling of fruition born from those [seeds].

Explanation: What is pleasant feeling? Pleasant feeling is the comfortable, joyful feeling born conditioned by the six sense faculties and object-fields that are conducive to pleasure, belonging to the dharmas embraced within feeling. What is painful feeling? Painful feeling is the non-comfortable, non-joyful feeling born conditioned by the six sense faculties and object-fields that are conducive to pain and are contrary to the mind, belonging to the dharmas embraced within feeling. What is neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling? Neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling is the feeling that is neither comfortable nor uncomfortable, born conditioned by the six sense faculties and object-fields that are conducive to neither-painful-nor-pleasant, belonging to the dharmas embraced within feeling. In the desire realm, there are these three feelings. In the form realm, there are only pleasant feeling and neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling; there is no painful feeling. From the fourth dhyāna upwards, up to the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, there is only neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling. Neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling also has two kinds: The first is the feeling of seeds embraced by the seeds of contact, which is feeling that has not yet manifested; the second is the feeling of fruition born conditioned by the seeds of contact.
