(16) Question: How should it be understood that all formations (行) serve as three kinds of conditions (缘) with regard to consciousness (识)? Answer: First, by virtue of their ability to stimulate the seeds (种子) of that [consciousness], they serve as the simultaneous condition (俱有缘). Subsequently, because [consciousness] arises continuously due to the force of those [formations], they serve as the condition of immediate cessation and arising (无间灭生起缘). And because the future fruit (果) of that [consciousness] is thereby produced, they serve as the condition of remote cessation and instigation (久远灭引发缘). Just as formations serve as conditions for consciousness, so too does consciousness serve as conditions for name-and-form (名色), name-and-form for the six sense bases (六处), the six sense bases for contact (触), and contact for feeling (受).
Question: How should it be understood that feeling serves as three kinds of conditions with regard to craving (爱)? Answer: It should be understood that because [feeling] causes the arising of pleasure and attachment (乐着), it serves as the simultaneous condition. Immediately after this, because actions such as seeking arise due to the force of that [feeling], it serves as the condition of immediate cessation and arising. And because it establishes the future [state] which is difficult to escape due to the continuity of that [feeling], it serves as the condition of remote cessation and instigation.
