Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, Volume X (The Twelve Nidānas)

(27) Original text: As previously mentioned, among the eight gates of dependent origination, how many are revealed by the twelve links of dependent origination? How many are not? Answer: Three gates are revealed by them, meaning two are partially revealed and one is fully revealed. The remaining gates are not. Which two are partially revealed? The gate of the arising of inner consciousness and the gate of the operation of one's own karma. Which one is fully revealed? The gate of the cyclic existence of sentient beings.

Explanation: As stated earlier, among the eight gates of dependent origination, how many are revealed by the twelve links of dependent origination, and how many are not? Answer: Three gates are revealed by the twelve links of dependent origination, while the others are not. Among them, two are partially revealed by the twelve links, and one is fully revealed by them.

Which two are partially revealed by the twelve links? The gate of the arising of inner consciousness and the gate of the operation of one's own karma are partially revealed by the twelve links. Which one is fully revealed? The gate of the cyclic existence of sentient beings is fully revealed by the twelve links.

Original text: Question: For those who do not correctly comprehend the principle of dependent origination, how many faults are there? Answer: There are five. They give rise to the view of self, and they can generate views associated with prior states. As with views associated with prior states, so too with views associated with after states and views associated with both prior and after states. Furthermore, they fiercely and rigidly adhere to those views; there is grasping and fear. In the present life, they do not attain parinirvana. This is called the fifth fault. Question: For those who correctly comprehend it, how many benefits are there? Answer: Corresponding to the five faults mentioned above, it should be understood that there are also five benefits.

Explanation: Question: How many faults do those who fail to correctly comprehend the principle of dependent origination have? Answer: There are five faults: 1. They give rise to the view of self; 2. They can generate views associated with prior states; 3. Just as with views associated with prior states, they can also generate views associated with after states and views associated with both prior and after states; 4. Moreover, they develop fierce and rigid adherence to these views without relinquishing them; 5. In the present life, they cannot attain parinirvana. Question: How many excellent benefits do those who correctly comprehend the principle of dependent origination have? Answer: Corresponding to the five faults mentioned above, it should be understood that there are also five corresponding excellent benefits.
