Fifty-five Volumes of Yoga

What is called the realization through morality? It is the precepts cherished by the saints. Because one has attained the resolve (vyavasaya) not to perform actions leading to the evil destinies.

Second Explanation: As stated in the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, Volume 71, Page 3: Question: What are the characteristics of the realization through morality? Answer: If one has achieved the realization through morality; they will never again, even intentionally, kill a living being, take what is not given, engage in sexual misconduct, knowingly speak falsehood, or drink rice-liquor (Sura) and other intoxicants which are causes of heedlessness. Question: What is the intrinsic nature of the realization through morality? Answer: Its intrinsic nature is the bodily and verbal actions cherished by the saints. Or, the bodhipakṣa dharmas (aids to enlightenment) concomitant with it are its intrinsic nature. Question: What function should the realization through morality be said to perform? Answer: The function of the realization through morality is the liberation from the manifold sufferings of the evil destinies. It is further stated: The realization through morality is also of immeasurable kinds. This refers to the various distinctions based on abstaining from the ten unwholesome courses of action which are grave transgressions. Also, according to the continuity [of practitioners], it has many kinds. This refers to the bodies of the Stream-enterer (Srota-apanna) up to the Arhat, the Pratyekabuddha, the Bodhisattva, the Tathagata, and so forth, with immeasurable distinctions. 

Third Explanation: As stated in the Xianyang Shengjiao Lun (Treatise on the Elucidation of the Holy Teaching), Volume 17, Page 3: Question: With what is the realization through morality constituted? Answer: It is constituted by the bodily, verbal, and other actions cherished by the saints. Or, the bodhipakṣa dharmas concomitant with them constitute it. Question: What are the characteristics of the realization through morality? Answer: If one has achieved the realization through morality; even towards animals, they will never intentionally kill them; nor take what is not given, engage in improper sexual conduct, knowingly speak falsehood, or drink Sura, Maireya, Madya, or other intoxicants which are causes of heedlessness. 

Fourth Explanation: As stated in the Cheng Weishi Lun (Treatise on the Establishment of Consciousness-Only), Volume 9, Page 11: Third, the realization through morality. This refers to the uncontaminated (anāsrava) morality. It removes the defilement of moral transgression, causing the realization (vipaśyanā) to increase in clarity; hence it is also called a realization (avagraha).
