Samadhi, or right concentration, is a state of mental and physical equilibrium where meditative absorption and wisdom are equally cultivated. When an individual encounters a Dharma teaching, deeply contemplates and investigates it with focused intent, and suddenly experiences an inner resonance with the teaching, profoundly comprehending its essence and realizing the profound meaning it points to, wisdom surges forth. The heart overflows with inexpressible joy.
Following this, the body and mind become light, tranquil, and comfortable. Whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, one feels as if dwelling in empty space, as if entering an uninhabited realm. The inner mind is vast, open, broad, and serene; thoughts are profound, and the intellect is sharp. Energy channels rise to the chest and shoulders; the back becomes straight and upright, the chest broadens, the shoulders sink downward, and the body feels light as a swallow. The mind is utterly void, corresponding with emptiness, corresponding with non-self, and corresponding with the absence of the four characteristics. All that is perceived feels illusory and unreal. Contemplation becomes deep, singular, subtle, and clear. A continuous sense of joy pervades the heart, bringing peace and tranquility, free from distracting delusions and floating thoughts. There is no past, no future; the present is also insubstantial. The three times are transcended into emptiness, yet even emptiness itself does not remain. The heart-mind is expansive and compassionate, tolerant and magnanimous, not contending with others' faults, not calculating good or evil, not clinging to form, sound, smell, taste, touch, or mental objects. Before the five desires, one is like a walking corpse; unmoved by the eight winds, as if seated upon a mountain of precious jewels.
Concentration and wisdom must be cultivated together, without bias or imbalance. If either one is lacking, it is not Samadhi; if either one is biased, it is not right concentration. The equal cultivation of concentration and wisdom is true Samadhi and true right concentration.
