Some say that uninterrupted mental engagement seems to occur only after the Dharma meaning has penetrated the manas (the mental faculty), implying that only the manas can achieve uninterrupted mental engagement and cling to it thought after thought without letting go. In truth, the merits arise as an inevitable outcome of the manas’ recognition or transformation. As long as the manas genuinely recognizes and embraces the Dharma, the merits of realizing the fruition will naturally manifest, and wisdom will also arise. This is a series of naturally unfolding processes, and the root of realizing the Dharma still lies in the manas.
This insight is excellent. Uninterrupted mental engagement—"uninterrupted" meaning without cessation—can only be achieved when the manas continuously relies on the Dharma meaning, reflecting on it day and night, thought after thought without interruption. This requires the conscious mind to cultivate and permeate itself with the Dharma, successfully influencing the manas. When the manas recognizes the profound importance of the Dharma, it will cling to the Dharma thought after thought, with the mind never departing from it. One day, the Dharma will surely be realized. If the manas does not cling to the Dharma, the conscious mind’s focus on the Dharma will inevitably break, making it impossible to rely on the Dharma uninterruptedly.
