How does consciousness permeate the manas (mind-root)? Consciousness must apply right attention and engage in right contemplation—skillful contemplation—regarding all phenomena and principles. Simultaneously, this allows the manas to comprehend correct principles. Gradually, the manas becomes aligned with these correct principles; this is known as permeating the manas. Consciousness must engage in contemplation; without contemplation, it cannot permeate the manas. When consciousness frequently contemplates a particular principle, it causes the manas to follow along. Once permeated, the manas can also form new habitual functions, thereby transforming its pre-existing unwholesome tendencies.
