The arising and utilization of the true mind has the distinction of defilement and purity

Used daily yet unknown. The true mind is constantly arising in function moment by moment, yet sentient beings, due to ignorance, cannot know this, let alone know how He functions. The true mind is in use at all times; He Himself knows how to operate, how to give birth to the myriad dharmas. He will bring forth the corresponding functions according to His own operating principles, without our needing to use Him or manipulate Him. In fact, we cannot manipulate Him at all—within His operating rules we have absolutely no way to intervene. However, at the stage of ordinary beings, our true mind is now always helping us to create defiled karmic actions, to engage in very vulgar undertakings; when we create unwholesome karma, it happens often, yet He Himself never complains about any of this.

On the contrary, the Buddha's true mind functions supremely well—having reached the utmost, reached perfection, without the slightest deficiency, functioning in an infinitely good and infinitely great manner. The more tranquil our own seven-consciousness mind is, the better the true mind functions; the more defiled the seven-consciousness mind is, the less well the true mind functions. Since this true mind is always in function, we should find a way to locate Him and come to know exactly how He functions, how He can function better, more perfectly, more ultimately, and how to achieve a functioning like that of all the Buddhas, the World-Honored Ones. This is the goal we have been pursuing for countless kalpas.
