Lecture Notes on the Sūtra of the Collection of the Father and Son (Pitāputrasamāgamanasūtra) (161)

The Karmic Retribution of the Tongue Faculty Being Damaged Through Anger in a Dream

Explanation: The Buddha said: Great King, it is indeed so. When foolish ordinary beings (pṛthagjana) see in a dream that their tongue faculty has been damaged, their minds give rise to anger and resentment, and they commit evil karmic actions—three kinds of bodily karma, four kinds of verbal karma, and three kinds of mental karma. From the moment these actions are first committed, the karmic formations cease moment by moment as they are being created. After these karmic formations cease, they do not abide depending on the four directions, the four intermediate directions, above, or below. However, when life is about to reach its final end, the karmic retribution created in this very life all manifests in full, just as one, after waking from a dream, still dwells upon the events of the dream.
