What Is Called the Wisdom of Equality?

The equality wisdom (samatā-jñāna) is the nature that arises when the seventh consciousness eradicates its tainted, afflictive nature, transforming from the nature of consciousness into the nature of wisdom—the character it has after consciousness is transformed into wisdom. The equality of the seventh consciousness is based on the nature of the tathāgatagarbha; from the perspective of the tathāgatagarbha, all sentient beings are seen as equal in their tathatā nature, without distinguishing between yours, mine, or his—treating all sentient beings with equal impartiality. Therefore, when practicing generosity (dāna), one does not choose recipients, nor give only to one's own family members, but gives to those most in need, regarding others as oneself, treating even those with no kinship to oneself as oneself, and treating outsiders even better than one's own family—only that is true generosity born of the selfless and equal nature.
