Why Allow Consciousness to Permeate Manas?

Only manas knows what is good and acts accordingly, and refrains from what it deems not good. While consciousness recognizes both good and bad, manas operates differently; regardless of consciousness's judgment, it acts according to its own perceptions. Manas is formidable — what it deems good is good, and it acts; what it deems not good is not good, and no matter how beneficial, it refrains. This demonstrates the habitual nature of manas.

How can consciousness influence and transform manas? Sometimes, when the power of consciousness is strong and its control over manas is considerable, it can manipulate manas, compelling it to act in accordance with consciousness's intentions. Yet, there will inevitably come a day when manas breaks free from this constraint; it cannot always submit to consciousness. Therefore, consciousness must persuade manas through reason, not through constant coercion. The process of persuading manas with reason is called gradual influence and transformation, also known as education and reformation.

When manas is indecisive, its power weakens, and it must then heed the analytical thinking of consciousness and follow its advice. This is called rational behavior. Acting despite knowing it is wrong is irrational behavior driven by manas. Heeding the counsel of consciousness signifies the dominance of consciousness's rationality, while acting with full awareness of wrongdoing indicates the dominance of manas's habitual ignorance.
