Only the consciousness severs the view of self; the manas does not sever the view of self. The manas is not perfumed and remains that of an ordinary person. When entering the womb in the next life, the consciousness ceases. Upon rebirth as a human, neither the consciousness nor the manas has severed the view of self. The manifestation of the manas is identical to that of an ordinary person in the previous life, without any difference. Then, from where does the merit of attaining the fruition in the previous life manifest?
In reality, those who genuinely attained the fruition and realized the mind and saw the nature in their previous life, because their manas was perfumed, upon rebirth as humans, their mental conduct is decisively distinct from that of ordinary people. The longer the duration of their practice in the previous life, the purer their mental conduct becomes, and the greater the distinction from ordinary people. Before studying Buddhism, even their consciousness does not understand why they are different from others. When scolded as socially inept, their consciousness still feels distressed. Sometimes they wish to be like others, to keep pace with society, and to similarly indulge in greed, hatred, and delusion, but the manas remains unwilling.
