Before attaining enlightenment, many people imagine what True Suchness and Buddha-nature might be like in various ways. Yet after achieving enlightenment and experiencing it firsthand, they realize: "So this is what True Suchness and Buddha-nature truly are—I had completely misapprehended it all along." What is learned from others, processed through one's own conscious thinking, differs significantly from reality. How many throughout beginningless kalpas have imagined it correctly? I believe not a single person could have. Therefore, what is personally verified by the mental faculty (manas) is the most reliable. To attain personal verification, one must personally contemplate and investigate; one cannot directly accept the results of conscious thought as one's own direct experiential realization. This point is of utmost importance for Buddhist study and practice.
