The perfuming of the mental faculty by the mindfulness of consciousness enables the mental faculty to become fully endowed with mindfulness, whereby faith is perfected. Each dharma is initially guided and perfumed by consciousness; when the mental faculty becomes fully endowed, this constitutes realization, and practice is thereby accomplished.
Only when one realizes that body and mind are not truly existent can liberation be attained. If one merely believes that body and mind are not truly existent, liberation cannot be attained. The distance between belief and realization may be vast or narrow, entirely dependent on the individual's degree of cultivation. Without cultivation, the gap may span many kalpas.
