Commentary on the Pitāputrasamāgama Sūtra (Lecture 187)

Buddhist Practice Involves Cultivating the Seven Deluded Consciousnesses

In summary, practice entails cultivating the seven deluded consciousnesses. When the deluded mind is properly cultivated and becomes purified, and when the alaya consciousness contains no seeds of unwholesome karma, one attains Buddhahood and recovers one's original true nature. Currently, the karmic seeds stored within our alaya consciousness are defiled and obscured by ignorance. Our seven consciousnesses are afflicted by greed, hatred, and delusion. In contrast, the Buddha's seven consciousnesses are entirely purified, having undergone the transformation of consciousness into wisdom, attaining complete non-self.
