Q: At which stage does the Path of Seeing in Consciousness-Only occur? Is it after attaining the third or fourth fruition?
A: The Path of Seeing in Consciousness-Only primarily refers to realizing a portion of the seed wisdom of Consciousness-Only, which occurs after the third fruition and approaches the fourth fruition. A first-ground Bodhisattva must have been a Śrāvaka of the third fruition, having eradicated afflictions, though perhaps still retaining a trace of self-conceit and attachment to the five aggregates or the three realms of existence.
Ordinary practitioners studying the Consciousness-Only Dharma can likewise realize enlightenment. Once awakened, their insight is profound, subtle, and ultimate. Enlightenment attained through the Chan (Zen) tradition, however, yields wisdom that is coarse and shallow.
Bodhisattvas from the first ground up to the seventh ground cannot enter the orthodox stage of the Śrāvaka’s fourth fruition (Arhatship) and must not certify to the fourth fruition, as doing so would inevitably lead to Nirvāṇa. By retaining a trace of attachment, the Bodhisattva benefits continued practice and Dharma propagation in the Saha world; beyond this, no further necessity exists.
