The Process and Result of Contemplative Practice

The Process and Result of Insight Meditation

After observing the breath until the mind quiets down, one will discover that the respiratory system resembles an automated program, nearly akin to insentient matter and unrelated to oneself. This constitutes progress on the path of cultivation, and this very effect is sought. In time, more new discoveries will arise. Through such quantitative changes, a qualitative transformation will occur. The qualitative transformation reveals that the five aggregates are all illusory, impermanent, and devoid of self.

Gradually, the mind will detach from the physical body and sensory experiences, dividing itself into two parts: one is the observed insentient physical system, like a dull machine; the other is the observing conscious mind, which moves and functions very slowly. Emotional attachments diminish increasingly, the mental state grows steadily calmer and more stable, sensations lessen further, leaving only pure observation and awareness. Yet, the power of discernment grows increasingly potent, the mind becomes ever more subtle and refined, and more truths are unveiled. Later, one will find that both the observer and the observed grow increasingly empty, mechanical, and devoid of self, while ignorance gradually thins. Ultimately, ignorance is shattered, and the view of self is severed.
