To discover the truth, the manas must perceive the true reality of the dharmadhātu. Only when the manas attains realization can it distance itself from false appearances. The manas alone can command the six consciousnesses to reject false appearances and withdraw from them, for the mental consciousness lacks this authority. When the manas realizes the false appearances, it simultaneously gains the mastery to detach from them. Mere realization by the mental consciousness alone is ineffective. Since the manas is constantly, moment by moment, instant by instant, entangled with false appearances, how could the mental consciousness possibly separate itself from them?
The manas is like a hitching post. Even if the mental consciousness is permitted to gallop east and west, it must still circle around the pillar of the manas and is not allowed to stray far. If the hitching post of the manas were to shift and move about everywhere, could the wild horses of the six consciousnesses remain fixed in one place without following the manas's movement?
