The Wrong View of Clinging to the Feeling Aggregate as the Self

Among all erroneous views of self, the most common is regarding the aggregate of sensation as the self. Those who emphasize the aggregate of sensation are the most numerous, and those who create karma for the sake of sensory experiences are the most numerous. To suffer for the sake of face—that is, to endure physical suffering for the sensory experiences of consciousness—is how many people live. Throughout history, countless individuals have died for the sake of leaving a name that will be remembered forever. Those who died for loyalty, for face, for vanity, for reputation, for...—are there not far too many such people?

All these individuals are gravely mistaken in taking consciousness as the self, clinging to consciousness more fiercely than to the physical body.
