Liberation is a mind free from craving, free from afflictions and defilements, free from ignorance, unbound by all dharmas of the three realms. Such a mind is liberated, capable of transcending the cycle of birth and death within the three realms.
Liberation is of two kinds. One is the innate liberation that exists without cultivation, and the other is the liberation attained only through cultivation. The innate liberation belongs to the Tathagatagarbha mind-essence, which is inherently free from all bonds. It is without the afflictions of greed, hatred, and delusion; thus, it is not bound by them. It does not crave the dharmas of the three realms; thus, it is not bound by the three realms. It is without ignorance; thus, it is not bound by ignorance. Being inherently of non-self nature, it is not bound by the self. It is free and unconstrained, unbound by all dharmas, and does not suffer the cycle of birth and death within the three realms.
The liberation attainable only through cultivation is the liberation gained by the deluded mind of the seventh consciousness. By cultivating the principles of the Mahayana and Hinayana vehicles, the deluded mind of the seventh consciousness eradicates afflictions and ignorance, thereby attaining liberation, transcending birth and death, attaining Nirvana, and gaining coolness.
