Q&A 16 on the Contemplation Practice of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness

Question: I am currently struggling with the leg position during meditation. Every time I sit in the half-lotus position for about 50 minutes to an hour, just as my mind begins to enter a focused state, the pain in my ankle, knee, and hip joints becomes unbearable. I can't hold it much longer and have to release the position, which disrupts my contemplation. Is there any way to overcome this obstacle?

Answer: This is because the qi in your body is blocked in the triangular area of your lower back and hips, specifically around the Bālido acupoint. There are stagnations near the hip bones preventing the smooth flow of qi and blood. Generally, this is caused by blockages of cold-dampness and waste matter. You can try the following methods to address it:

1. Ocean Swinging: While sitting in the full-lotus position, perform the Ocean Swinging movement. First swing forward, then backward, ensuring both clockwise and counterclockwise rotations. Alternate between pressing and releasing to open the qi and blood channels and clear the blockages.

2. Acupuncture: Use acupuncture needles on the blocked acupoints to unclog the stagnant areas. Combine this with Ocean Swinging and standing meditation (Zhan Zhuang). Acupuncture tends to yield relatively faster results.

3. Massage: Apply moxa-infused oil or ointment to the triangular area of the lower back and the Bālido acupoint, massaging repeatedly.

4. Acupoint Stimulation: At the Weizhong acupoint (located behind the knees), use a moderately firm stick to press and massage gently, promoting the smooth circulation of qi and blood. Areas like the waist, legs, and hips where blockages exist should also be massaged. You can also gently tap the legs with hollow fists, focusing on both the inner and outer thighs along the Gallbladder and Liver meridians. This helps qi and blood flow more easily.

5. Moxibustion: Apply moxibustion appropriately to key acupoints to dispel cold-dampness, which will help clear the meridians.

6. Fasting (Bigu): Another method is fasting, which allows the body to self-regulate. Cold-dampness and blockages will dissipate, and your waist and legs will become more flexible, making the lotus position easier to maintain. It is recommended to fast periodically when the weather is not too hot. Fasting two or three times a year will help regulate and nourish your body very effectively.
