The Manifestation of Paramārtha-Indriya and Internal Lakṣaṇa

The Five Roots consist of the gross material sense faculties and the subtle material sense faculties, both being material forms composed of the four elements. Among them, the five external sense faculties are coarse material forms, while the five subtle sense faculties are subtle material forms. Therefore, when our physical body is healthy and nourished, the four elements within the subtle sense faculties become harmonized. Consequently, the tathāgatagarbha can appropriate these harmonized four elements to accurately manifest the internal form aspect, enabling the six consciousnesses to perceive and discern things as they truly are. Otherwise, when the subtle sense faculties lack nourishment and the four elements become imbalanced, the tathāgatagarbha appropriates disharmonious four elements, which cannot accurately manifest the internal form aspect. Distortions and alterations then occur in the internal form aspect, causing the discernment by the six consciousnesses to become inaccurate and untrue. Sentient beings will consequently exhibit inferior wisdom, poor memory, frequent forgetfulness, or what is commonly called amnesia. This is why students need to nourish their brains and supplement nutrition before exams—to ensure the conscious mind functions properly, enabling them to clearly and accurately discern and recall previously learned content.
