Lectures on the Sūtra of the Collection of the Father and Son (Pitāputrasamāgamanasūtra) (232)

The Cause of Wealth, Happiness, and Freedom

Original text:

Explanation: All these adornments of wealth and wondrous happiness were obtained by King Anantakīrti through his accumulation of vast roots of goodness and the power of merit in past lives. None of this came from nowhere; it was not something that could be enjoyed without any reason. Around that jeweled, majestic city there were also eighty-four thousand pure gardens and parks. In each garden there were eight great ponds, each pond half a yojana in breadth. On the banks of each pond there were four stairways made of four kinds of jewels, ingeniously adorned. The waters endowed with the eight excellent qualities filled them, and lotuses of many colors bloomed and spread across the ponds. On the banks of those ponds there were even more flowers, such as atimuktaka flowers, campaka flowers, vāṣikī flowers, sumanā flowers, aśoka flowers, and puṣkara flowers—such various and numerous wondrous fragrant flowers. King Anantakīrti and his ministers and citizens dwelt in the gardens, enjoying recreation and amusement together.

Original text:

Explanation: The Buddha said: Great King, the royal palace city of King Anantakīrti was tall, broad, majestic, and splendid. Rows of jeweled tāla trees were planted upon it. Jeweled nets spread all around, and jeweled bells chimed in harmony, producing wondrous sounds like the music of five instruments played in ensemble. At that time, the people relied on the King's virtuous transformation, living lives of wealth, happiness, freedom, peace, and security.
