The Six Consciousnesses Do Not Go Beyond the Supreme Faculty

When the left hand grasps the right hand, one can feel the left hand being cool and the right hand being warm; each hand has its own awareness. So how many body consciousnesses and mind consciousnesses does a person actually have?

The six consciousnesses all arise at the supreme faculty (indriya) at the back of the brain, discerning the six sense objects within the supreme faculty. Both the left and right hands are within the supreme faculty, including the object of touch; the feeling is felt within the supreme faculty. Given this, how many eye consciousnesses and mind consciousnesses could there be?

Whether discerning a hundred forms or touching a hundred kinds of tangibles, they are all forms and tangibles within the supreme faculty, and all are discerned and felt within the supreme faculty. The conscious mind never goes beyond the supreme faculty—it simply takes on a hundred with one. The Great Compassionate One with a thousand hands and a thousand eyes, whose whole body is hands and eyes—what does this mean?
