The eighth consciousness always strives to cooperate with the mental factor of thought within the manas, endeavoring to fulfill all demands and needs of the manas without the slightest complaint. However, whether the manas possesses the meritorious virtue for enjoyment, whether it has planted the seeds, whether the seeds have ripened, and whether the conditions for the fruition of karma are complete—this presents a significant issue. If these conditions are not met, the eighth consciousness has no means to satisfy what the manas seeks and requires.
The various dissatisfactions experienced in human life illustrate the eighth consciousness's inability to meet the needs of the manas. Only when the manas has a need that remains unfulfilled does one feel dissatisfied. If the manas has no need, there arises no sense of dissatisfaction or perception of lack, because no such goal was set in the first place, nor was there any demand in that regard. Without demands, without intentions, without desires, one naturally does not expect to reap any fruit. Certainly, the conscious mind remains unaware of many wishes set by the manas; thus, it does not understand why the manas becomes displeased, unhappy, why it inexplicably feels melancholy and a sense of loss, or why it inexplicably envies others' gains.
