If one's concentration power is sufficient and knowledge and insight are adequate, one should utilize the stillness within meditation to strengthen concentration. Then, contemplate the Dharma, contemplating the five aggregates. After that, investigate Chan, maintaining an attitude of questioning doubt within the mind at all times. First, sever the self-view; then, investigate Chan to realize the mind.
The purpose of studying the Dharma is for contemplation and subsequent realization. If one cannot contemplate, it indicates that the power of thinking is not sufficiently developed, meaning the concentration power is inadequate. Meditation without deliberate contemplation (deliberation within meditation) cannot contribute significantly to realizing the Dharma. Therefore, one should know how to cultivate concentration, allowing meditation to fulfill its proper function.
