Question: "When it says 'one should abide nowhere and give rise to the mind,' if this mind refers to the Tathagatagarbha, why did the Buddha use the word 'should'? Isn't the true mind, the Tathagatagarbha, inherently free from abiding? And isn't this 'should' or 'should not' beyond the control of the conscious mind? Please, Master, offer your guidance. Thank you~
Answer: The word 'should' here means that when the eighth consciousness (Alaya) responds to conditions and manifests all dharmas, it does so without abiding. Similarly, the seventh consciousness should also face the objects of the six senses and all phenomena without abiding. This is the meaning conveyed by 'should'.
