Carefully observe the behaviors of body, speech, and mind to discern with which consciousness they ultimately correspond and which consciousness's activities they primarily manifest. Of course, all actions of body, speech, and mind cannot be separated from the mental faculty (manas), nor can they be separated from the mental consciousness (mano-vijñāna). However, there are still distinctions within them.
Bodily actions are the activities of the six consciousnesses; this superficial phenomenon is already quite evident. Although behind them lies the dominant function of the mental faculty, its following function, and even more, the function of the eighth consciousness (ālaya-vijñāna).
Verbal actions are primarily the activities of mental consciousness, with mental consciousness being predominant. Of course, there is also the cooperation of the five sense consciousnesses, the dominant function of the mental faculty, its following function, and even more, the function of the eighth consciousness.
Mental actions primarily involve the mental activities of the mental faculty, mainly manifesting the thoughts and mental nature of the mental faculty. Although there is also the function of mental consciousness, and even more, the function of the eighth consciousness, mental actions absolutely and completely correspond to the mental faculty; they are the thoughts and concepts of the mental faculty, despite the supervisory and regulatory function of mental consciousness.
