Question: Is it good to practice by simply abiding in the present moment, being aware of the present moment, thinking nothing, and not engaging in any thought?
Answer: This is the concentration of non-Buddhist paths, which mistakenly believes that preventing thoughts from arising can lead to liberation from birth and death and the attainment of Nirvana. If one thinks of nothing at all, how can wisdom be attained? Without wisdom, how can one transcend the cycle of birth and death?
However, occasionally practicing some concentration without thought can bring physical and mental relaxation and joy after emerging from it, reduce afflictions, and refine the mind. Seizing this opportunity to contemplate and practice the Dharma is precisely beneficial for contemplation, practice, and subduing afflictions. Yet, one should not practice solely in this manner, wasting precious time for spiritual cultivation.
