Various Ways and Methods of Meditation Practice

Each individual's approach to cultivating concentration varies, firstly due to differences in innate capacity, and secondly because meditative absorption arises from multiple sources; any method can lead to entering a state of concentration. For some, contemplation of the Dharma's meaning causes concentration to vanish, scattering the mind, while for others, contemplating the Dharma's meaning swiftly gives rise to concentration, which becomes deep. The latter case relies on wisdom guiding concentration, prompting its arising and deepening, not merely depending on seated meditation to induce concentration. Wisdom is the hand that parts the clouds to reveal the light; using wisdom to direct the mind towards the contemplated point of Dharma meaning, focusing single-pointedly in contemplation, concentration arises, uniting concentration and wisdom. The balanced cultivation of concentration and wisdom most readily gives birth to samadhi, leading to the fruition of liberation.

In the course of practice, one should be adept at discovering one's own strengths and advantages, leveraging strengths and avoiding weaknesses, thereby progressing swiftly in practice. Those with strong wisdom need not follow the same path as others, such as all starting with contemplation of the four foundations of mindfulness or all beginning with the meditation on the nine stages of a decaying corpse, constantly groping for a method. They can formulate a unique practice method suited to themselves. As long as they discover that progress is swift by following this approach, they should persist with it. After all, the methods of practice are innumerable, and innate capacities vary greatly; thus, it is impossible for everyone to use the identical practice method uniformly.
