Attaining Bodhi without Cutting Off Afflictions Is Not the Buddha's Teaching

Original text of Volume Two of the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra: 尔时大慧菩萨摩诃萨白佛言。世尊。世尊修多罗说。如来藏自性清净。转三十二相入于一切众生身中。如大价宝。垢衣所缠。如来之藏常住不变。亦复如是。而阴界入垢衣所缠。贪欲恚痴不实妄想尘劳所污。一切诸佛之所演说。 

Explanation: The tathāgatagarbha, which is intrinsically pure, is like a precious gem wrapped in the dirty garments of the five aggregates, the eighteen realms, and the twelve entrances, and is defiled by the afflictions of greed, anger, and delusion, as well as by false thoughts and worldly toils. If one wishes to see the pure tathāgatagarbha, one must break through the five aggregates, the eighteen realms, and the twelve entrances, and wash away the afflictions of greed, anger, and delusion along with false thoughts and worldly toils; only then can the tathāgatagarbha manifest. This passage clearly indicates that in order to realize the tathāgatagarbha, one must eradicate the view of self (satkāya-dṛṣṭi-prahāṇa) and eliminate the afflictions of greed, anger, and delusion. Therefore, without eradicating the view of self and without removing the afflictions, one cannot realize the tathāgatagarbha. Hence, the claim that one can attain bodhi without eradicating afflictions is not the Buddha's teaching.
