Explanation: After establishing these internal and external matters, in order to directly perceive these matters, one strengthens the power of intensified attention (adhimātra-manaskāra-bala) for seeing the Dharma, and from the perspective of the changes of all dharmas, one deliberates upon and contemplates the impermanence of internal and external matters. Among these, internal matters have fifteen kinds of changes, and there are eight causes and conditions for such changes. What are the fifteen kinds of changes in internal matters? The first is the change of positional stages as the material body passes through different periods; the second is the change that appears in manifest color, such as the black, white, red, or yellow of one's complexion; the third is the change that appears in shape and form, such as being tall or short, fat or thin, and so on; the fourth is the change that appears in the flourishing and decline of the material body, such as having strength or lacking strength, and so on; the fifth is the change that appears in the faculties and joints of the body, such as mutilations like severed arms or broken legs;

the sixth is the change that appears in labor, such as being fatigued or not fatigued, and so on; the seventh is the change that appears in being harmed by others, such as being bullied, framed, slandered, having one's reputation damaged, and so on; the eighth is the change that appears in cold and heat, such as having a fever, feeling chilled, and so on; the ninth is the change that appears in deportment and movement, such as the material body becoming sluggish, hunchbacked, or having difficulty moving, and so on; the tenth is the change that appears in the objects of contact, such as the shifts and alterations in the people, matters, and things one contacts; the eleventh is the change that appears in the things done with a defiled mind, such as the transformation between wholesome and unwholesome karma; the twelfth is the change that appears in bodily illness, where one was previously healthy but now suffers from sickness and pain, and so on; the thirteenth is the change that appears in death, when life comes to an end; the fourteenth is the change that appears after death, when the body turns bruised, swollen, and bloated; the fifteenth is the change that appears after death, when the corpse disappears without a trace and even the ashes vanish without a shadow.
