Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra: Volume 34 (32)

How to observe the impermanent nature of all variations in fragrant garlands and adornments. That is, first seeing various fragrant garlands, fresh, flourishing, and fragrant; later seeing them withered, decayed, and foul-smelling. Having seen this, one thinks thus: Thus, all conditioned phenomena are impermanent by nature. The rest as previously stated. How to observe the impermanent nature of variations in necessities. That is, seeing them not yet made, then made, completed, destroyed, with variations before and after. Having seen this, one thinks thus: Thus, all conditioned phenomena are impermanent by nature. The rest as previously stated.

Explanation: How to observe the impermanent nature of all variations in fragrant garlands and adornments? Presently seeing various fragrant garlands, splendid and beautiful, fragrant and overflowing; later seeing the garlands withered, yellowed, broken, rotten, and foul-smelling; seeing these phenomena, one has this thought: Thus, all conditioned phenomena are truly impermanent by nature. How to observe the impermanent nature of variations in necessities of life? Observing that necessities of life were not yet made before, later were made, after being used were destroyed, with continuous variations before and after; observing these phenomena, one has this thought: Thus, all conditioned phenomena are truly impermanent by nature.
