Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra: Volume 34 (73)

Original text: After having directly perceived the Four Noble Truths, up to the point of permanently cutting off all afflictions eliminated during the path of insight, this is called the withdrawal of attention. Furthermore, thereafter, in order to progressively eliminate the afflictions to be eliminated through cultivation, one repeatedly practices according to the path attained. Having permanently eradicated the gross and middling grades of afflictions pertaining to the desire realm, one attains the fruit of Once-Returner. As with the Stream-Enterer fruit and all its characteristics, it should be understood similarly here. However, there are minor distinctions.

Explanation: After directly perceiving the Four Noble Truths, up to the point of permanently cutting off all afflictions eliminated during the path of insight, this is called the withdrawal of attention, which is the stage of the first fruition (Stream-Entry), involving the elimination of the subtle grades of afflictions in the desire realm. Furthermore, thereafter, desiring to progressively eliminate the afflictions and delusions that should be eliminated through cultivation, based on the realization of self-view abandonment attained in the first fruition, one applies even more diligent and vigorous practice. After permanently eradicating the gross and middling grades of afflictions in the desire realm, one attains the second fruition, the Once-Returner. Just as with the merits possessed upon attaining the first fruition, the merits possessed by the second fruition practitioner are likewise. However, there are still some minor distinctions within this.
