The Function of Manas in Dharma Principles

The Buddhist doctrines concerning the eradication of self-view and the principle of the manas (subconscious) hold immense benefit for both Buddhism and humanity. Psychologists and sociologists can derive significant insights from them. By understanding the principle of the manas, or the subconscious, individuals can engage in self-reflection, observe their own psychological phenomena, and thereby come to know themselves, treat themselves appropriately, and even transform themselves—even if they do not yet comprehend the Buddhist Dharma. Sales personnel in enterprises also benefit, as it enables them to know both themselves and others, thereby gaining control over the psychology of their counterparts and guiding them effectively. Sales success follows naturally. All walks of life benefit from psychology, which is essentially the principle of the subconscious manas. What success literature refers to as "talking to oneself" is precisely the conscious mind influencing and guiding the subconscious manas, thereby subduing the ego.

All issues of psychological barriers stem from problems with the manas and the conscious mind. Schizophrenia is also a problem rooted in the manas and consciousness. When one "talks to oneself," if the two selves cannot reconcile their dialogue, a split occurs. The fundamental issue in schizophrenia is the lack of unity in thought and values between the manas and the conscious mind. The conscious mind fails to persuade the manas to adapt to society. Sometimes, the conscious mind itself does not grasp the core problem and thus cannot effectively persuade or guide the manas. If one remains utterly incompatible with society, becomes trapped in a misconception or dead end, and finds their thoughts and perspectives constrained and unable to open up, the mind splits. If one can clearly understand the issue of the five aggregates and the nature of the manas and consciousness, and realize the emptiness of all phenomena, no individual would suffer from mental or psychological illnesses.
